Deckard

It was dark before I was back on my Harley and on my way to the farmhouse. We’d searched all along the river and spanned out into the surrounding woods, searching for whatever had crossed. Or whatevers. As there had obviously been more than one if the path they’d made was any indication, but we’d lost the trail. The strange thing was that if Zeb hadn’t described that smell to me this morning—dead leaves mildewed and drenched in honey—I would have thought something was wrong with my nose.

And I already had enough things wrong with me. I had kissed Colt. Kissed him. He was my mate, yes, but he didn’t know that. He didn’t have all his memories or his faculties, and I had taken advantage. The wolf raged in my chest for even thinking that. Colt was whole and perfect as far as he could tell, and he needed us to take care of him. He was our mate, and we would never hurt him. Never. It had been one chaste kiss, and that was where it was going to have to stay. Until he had his memories and was of sound mind, I’d hold him close while he slept to keep him safe and keep the rest of me to my damned self.

I sighed against the wind in my face. The moon was high and bright tonight without a cloud in the sky to block its light. I needed to be thinking about the fight I knew was coming. I needed to be working harder to figure out what had happened to Colt. The doc thought the problem wasn’t physical. That only left psychological, something traumatic his brain had repressed. Which, given the scars, I was inclined to believe that was a real possibility. But there was another option as well…magic. I’d never encountered someone who’d had their mind played with. Apparently, even among the magical community, it just wasn’t done. Like the cardinal rule that you didn’t break.

The thought that someone had put a spell on Colt—my sweet, scarred mate—had the crimson of my wolf eyes burning across my vision. I already wanted the blood of whoever had left those marks on his body. But if they’d done that to his mind…caused his panic and fear and had him sleepwalking out in the cold, they were going to take so much longer to die than I’d originally planned.

I’d given up hope that he’d simply been in an accident and somehow stumbled his way into our territory. The sketch Kyle had done of Colt and sent out to all the local law enforcement agencies had yielded zero results. There were no missing persons cases with his likeness nor did anyone matching his description have a criminal record.

The lights of the house came into view as I crested the last little hill and started down the long driveway. I smelled him before I saw him, but as I got closer, Colt stood from one of the rocking chairs on the front side of the wrap-around porch.
